Virtually every Japanese municipality has at least one temple, while large cultural centers like Kyoto have several thousands of them. Temples store and display sacred Buddhist objects, and some of them used to or still function as monasteries. It’s a wonderful experience to explore the structures of these building: Main Hall, Gates, Bell, Cemetery. One of the most interesting structures is the Pagoda, a very tall tower with multiple eaves used to store remains of the Buddha such as a tooth, usually in form of a representation. Japan is a wonderful combination of old and modern structures. For example, in small city such as Kyoto is very interesting to see many buildings that combines contemporary forms with age-old techniques and natural materials such as the sliding wood slat screens along an inner wall that recall the corridors of old Japanese temples, whereas in the new landmark in Ginza, Tokyo is possible to admire a lot of shopping and business districts that are full of very tall building that are very similar to the one in the other metropolis of the world such as New York.

What I like most about Japan is its architecture and zen gardens. Truly wonderful. Im curious if people who live in these temples still practice ninjitsu?

Temples are the places of worship in Japanese Buddhism. Virtually every Japanese municipality has at least one temple, while large cultural centers like Kyoto have several thousands.

So Kyoto serves as old city in Japan and Tokyo as metropolitan one...interesting. I've never been to Kyoto, maybe I'll check it out next year

Many of the architectural properties are designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Assets, among which a set of 17 historic sites was registered as World Cultural Heritage in 1993.
